Candy Canes - a family favorite

Back in 1997 we picked up a Christmas tradition from some friends in Colorado - Homemade Candy Canes.

Since that time we have brought new families into our tradition by sharing a night of homemade candy cane making. This year we had three rounds of candy canes! Even though it's a big, messy process, we look forward to it every Christmas!

Our great next door neighbors, the Stephenson's had no idea what they were getting into when we invited them over to make candy canes. I believe one of them thought we were going to take a "cookie cutter" to punch out candy canes from dough.
These candy canes are actually made by boiling the candy to soft-crack, pulling it like taffy and shaping it into a brick. Then we wrap green and red stripes of candy around the brick and begin twisting off a long strip. Cut off pieces and give to the kids for shaping them into crooks, hearts, circles, initials and even a few cobras!
